Many people suffer from things like anxiety, depression, bipolar, obsessive/compulsive condition, and many other neuro atypical experiences. At Camp Philosophy (CP), many of us have found that camping has helped alleviate some of the symptoms of these disorders (for a time), providing a sense of relief and the ability to “refresh” and “have a break” from the difficulties of daily “normal” life. Below are just a few of the many benefits we have found in a camping retreat.

- Low Stress – Camping is nearly always low impact. There are very little responsibilities (if any) and you are free to truly relax your mind.
- Fresh Air – Deep breathing can help calm the mind, especially when it’s cool, crisp, fresh mountain air, away from the troubles of daily society.
- Meditation – In a low distraction environment like camping, meditation is a powerful way to calm the storm of the mind, discover things about the self that may not have been previously known (i.e. – become more aware), and let go of unneeded mental habits.
- Loved Ones – This one is a no-brainer but it helps to be amongst friends and people who care. This provides a safe space for your mind to feel open to just be yourself, where those around you accept you for who you are without any judgement or ridicule.
- Positive Conversation – In addition to being around loved ones, positive intellectual stimulation (for us this means chatting about philosophy or philosophically related topics) is a fantastic way to channel the mind towards interesting topics and away from subjects that degrade the self. This is especially helpful for those who might suffer from negative self-talk or self-degrading “tapes” that play.
- Relaxation – While camping you can truly rest the body and mind. Naps or “just doing nothing” are a normal occurrence. It is during these times that many of us feel the ability to “recharge the batteries”.
- Hiking – Physical exercise is excellent for the brain and hiking in the mountains (or the desert) with beautiful views of nature is almost always a positive for mental well-being.
- Sleep – With such a low stress environment, you are free to sleep as long as you want! Take all the time you need to refuel the tank.
